Bayern's first team may have barely had a pre-season, but look a formidable force as they begin their 2010-11 campaign. Last year, the Bundesliga record champions had their worst campaign start in 30 years, and were hovering not far from the relegation zone. Eventually, the players learned coach Louis van Gaal’s system, and nearly marched to a treble in the spring.
Heading into the 2010-11 season, Bayern once again have their hopes set on silverware, and are aiming for success without summer signings. The team is exceptionally well coordinated, as demonstrated in their 2-0 German Supercup victory over Schalke, which was played just five days after many of their World Cup stars returned to training.
Still, Bayern are not quite at their sharpest. In last weekend’s DFB Pokal opener against fifth-tier Germania Windeck, the defending champions comfortably advanced with a 4-0 victory, but struggled to penetrate the opposing defence for long periods. After the game, Van Gaal labelled it Bayern’s worst performance of the pre-season.
In some regards, facing Wolfsburg early in the season is a good thing for die Roten. While it was difficult to beat Windeck’s 11-man defence, Wolfsburg will be more ambitious, and may leave Bayern with a bit more space to use in attack. Coming on the first day of the season, it will be a tall task to beat Wolfsburg. Die Wolfe are likely to be among the few teams to contend for the title, but Bayern are more than capable of coming up the better side, both on Friday and at season’s end.
Ambitious Wolfsburg Hoping To Reclaim Title
In recent years, matches between Wolfsburg and Bayern have been real spectacles for viewers. In the fall of 2008, Bayern reversed an early 2-0 deficit to earn a 4-2 victory. In the following spring, die Wolfe emphatically rebounded with a 5-1 win that set them on course for their first ever title. Having lost both matches against Bayern in 2009-10, Wolfsburg will look to rebound at the onset of the upcoming season.

“The important thing is that if we play like a team, we can take something from Munich.”
It will be no easy task, but should Wolfsburg secure three points, their status among the Bundesliga’s elite could soon be restored.

Arjen Robben is currently on vacation, having picked up a hamstring injury that will keep him out for the majority of the next two months. Additionally, Ivica Olic has taken a knock, and Breno is not yet fit. The injuries to Robben and Olic mean that Thomas Mueller will feature on the right wing, with Toni Kroos as the playmaker behind lone striker Miroslav Klose. Daniel van Buyten will likely partner Holger Badstuber in central defence, thus relegating Martin Demichelis to the bench.

PREDICTION
Had this match been pushed back to October or November, it may have been different, but based on form, Bayern are favourites. Wolfsburg are still feeling their way into McClaren’s system, and struggled in their DFB Pokal opener. Bayern were far from perfect, but won 4-0, and also recently beat red-hot Schalke, so the defending Bundesliga champions should be favoured to take three points.

World Cup standouts Bastian Schweinsteiger (Germany), Thomas Müller (Germany), Miroslav Klose (Germany), Arjen Robben (Netherlands) and Mark van Bommel (Netherlands) all apply their trade with Munich and their star power coupled with the brilliant Franck Ribery will ensure another successful season for Bayern.
Wolfsburg finished last campaign in 8th after a slow start under the eye of Armin Veh who was eventually sacked in January. Although Wolfsburg languished domestically, die Wolfe enjoyed a successful European campaign having advanced all the way to the quarter finals of the Europa League before being eliminated by eventual finalists Fulham.
As of press time, Wolfsburg have been successful in swatting off Juventus and their pursuit in all things Edin Džeko related. The 24 year old Bosnian striker scored 29 goals in all competitions for Wolfsburg last season but has been pushing for a move to the Bianconeri since the beginning of the summer. Reports also suggest the want-away goal getter has already agreed to personal terms with Juve and is simply waiting on the two clubs to reach an agreement.
Wolfsburg will want to hold onto the Bosnian international Džeko or find a like replacement such as Brazilian play-maker Diego who looks set to be swapped to Wolfsburg from Juve with Džeko headed in the opposite direction. Although the two are positionally different players, Diego has the ability to create for strikers and is brilliant at the set piece. No final deals have been reached for either player as the potential move looks to be slipping away.
Friday’s match between Bayern Munich and Wolfsburg won’t decide the title but it’ll go a long way in sending a message to the other title contenders in the league such as Schalke, Werder Bremen and Bayern Leverkusen if either of the teams is to win the match.
Tactically and with star winger Arjen Robben out injured, look for Bayern to set up with a back four of Badstuber, Demichelis, van Buyten and Lahm in front of Butt in goal. Mark van Bommel and Bastian Schweinsteiger will hold in the middle with a possible combination of Altintop and Kroos on the wings. Ivica Olic is also out injured which will leave Miroslav Klose up front with Thomas Muller just behind him in an attacking role. Franck Ribery will likely not feature due to his ongoing legal issues.
As for Wolfsburg, they’ve been slightly more busy in the comings and goings of players over the summer. In at Wolfsburg is central defender Simon Kjaer from Palermo, forward Mario Mandzukic from Dinamo Zagreb, and defender Arne Friedrich from Hertha Berlin. Out is striker Obafami Martins, defender Ricardo Costa and midfielder Christian Getner so it’s likely McClaren will take a few weeks to settle on his best starting XI.
I look for Bayern Munich to carry on business as usual and hope that Steve McClaren can inject the new manager gusto into his squad. A Wolfsburg win would be somewhat of an upset and with Munich at home in front of their faithful, look for Munich to scratch out a close win in an exciting match.
